Another motorsport Champion suffers major off-track injury

Nicky Hayden, the 2006 MotoGP champion is in serious condition after being involved in a road accident near Rimini on the Italian Riviera.

Hayden, who now races in World Superbikes where his style seems to have at last found a home although results have been unspectacular, was reported by local media (http://www.riminitoday.it/cron...) to have been in collision with a small Peugeot which is shown as having a badly damaged windscreen on the offside (i.e. right side in Italy) of the left-hand drive car.

The report says he is being treated for severe head and chest injuries. Reports say that he was "hit by a car" but the damage to the vehicle does not make it clear that the car driver was at fault.

Hayden was on a training run, with friends, following the SBK race at Imola on last weekend.

He is the latest in a string of leading sportsmen to have major accidents while cycling on public roads.
