acclimate v acclimatise

Don't say that:

acclimate

Do say this:

acclimatise

Why?:

To become accustomed to climate conditions is to acclimatise to them.

The term has expanded, and in some ways lost its precision, to include becoming used to changes in circumstances other than climate.

The word "acclimate" has come into use amongst some who make up words rather than taking the trouble to recall or learn the correct word and should not be used.

Use: sportsmen often arrive at venues for sports events in sufficient time to become used to e.g. levels of humidity, temperature or altitude all of which affect their performance.
