partaking v taking part

Don't say that:

partaking

Do say this:

taking part

Why?:

"Partaking" has a very specific meaning: it means to eat. You "partake" of a meal.

Also, one "partakes of" not "partakes in."

When you are engaged in doing something, perhaps with others, then you are "taking part" in that activity.

It is therefore incorrect to speak of "when Johnny is partaking in a football game" - that is "taking part."

Equally, it is incorrect to speak of "when Johnny is taking part in a jelly" - that is "partaking of"
