Online child abuse

The National Crime Agency in the UK is at the leading edge of online child abuse and convictions are increasingly frequent. Usually, cases involve international investigations and the negotiating of relationships with multiple overseas agencies. But sometimes the case is entirely domestic, in more senses than one. And then prosecutions can be quick, as a man and his cohabitee who formed a team of abusers found out yesterday.

Christopher Binch, 36, was arrested on 12th March 2022. Lindsay Mobey, aged 34, Binch's cohabitee, was arrested three days later.

Binch came to the attention of the National Crime Agency who identified him from contributions to an on-line chat room about child abuse. He had "been discussing his sexual interest in children and uploading indecent material."

Binch uploaded a video and a number of images which he had taken himself of a young child being sexually abused.

A review of the footage showed that Binch filmed the abuse but that it was carried out by a woman with tattoos. That was Mobey.

Analysis of Binch's phone revealed 347 indecent images of children and "a number of extreme and prohibited images."

There were a total of three videos taken by Binch.

According to the National Crime Agency "Binch was remanded in custody and in November last year, he pleaded guilty to ten charges, including the sexual assault of a child under 13, the taking, making, possession and distribution of indecent images of children, possession of extreme pornography and one count of possession of cocaine. In the same month, Lyndsay Mobey pleaded guilty to the sexual assault of a child under 13."

Yesterday, Binch was sentenced to eight years and one month in prison, placed on the sex offenders register for life and handed an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.

Mobey was jailed for two years and one month and will be on the sex offenders register for five years.

In this case, there was no financial element. The motive was to gain celebrity, of sorts, amongst like-minded persons.

According to the NCA "Binch and Mobey worked together to sexually abuse a young child, which he filmed and shared with other pædophiles on-line. Their actions were calculated and abhorrent; exploiting this child to satisfy their own sexual gratifications and gain some horrific form of kudos amongst the like-minded on-line."
