An oldie but a goodie: internet directory registration scam

There's a whole industry, across the world, that charges fees for doing things you can easily do for free and which give you the impression, whilst not actually saying so, that you need their services to obtain your rights. One is the domain name registration scam, that appears in several variants.

Here's today's.

The information in the mail, relating to a recent domain name purchase. Fraudsters (we never, ever, get an e-mail that does not contain some element of untruth and is, therefore, so far as we are concerned, a fraud) scan the lists of new domains issued and grab contact information in the minutes between purchase and the activation of domain privacy services.

In fact, search engines also scan the lists of new domains and add them: the domain which these con artists referred to has been listed on Google, for example, since a matter of hours after it was created, even though, at present, it consists of only a holding page.

All good scams contain both a carrot and a stick. Therefore this one not only offers domain registration but, falsely, claims "Failure to complete your domain name search engine registration by the expiration date may make it difficult for your customers to locate you on the web." They mean "expiry" but let's leave that on one side for the moment: the fact is that there is no, absolutely no, expiry date after which your domains will not be registered. It's a lie and lies are fraud.

The spam says "Please register these domains to search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo ASAP to avoid late fees." This, too, is a lie. There are no deadlines and there are no fees and, in particular, no late fees. It's a lie and lies are fraud.

The scammer's domain is hosted by Afilias Canada, Corp.
OrgId: ACC-308
Address: 4141 Yonge Street
Address: Suite 204
City: Toronto
StateProv: ON
PostalCode: M2P-2A8
Country: CA

The host's abuse e-mail is given as wbeaver@afilias.info

The domain's registration information is protected behind a privacy service that appears to be in Romania.
